We have carried out photoemission measurements to analyze the electronic structure of the anomalous Rydberg states in the hydrogen molecule. We show that these states are characterized by a very peculiar behavior of the photoelectron angular distributions with respect to the light polarization. Specifically, no significant anisotropy of the photoelectron emission is detected, while the analysis of the relative yield of photoelectrons emitted in different directions reveals a very complex, even multipolar, angular distribution behavior. Moreover, while the photoemission intensities for parallel and perpendicular polarization are in good agreement with the literature, for orthogonal polarization, remarkably different trends are observed for different Rydberg states. This demonstrates a genuine deviation from the textbook photoemission description of Rydberg states in the hydrogen molecule, and will be referred to as anomal
