LAS VEGAS, Nev. – In a news conference Wednesday afternoon, Sen. Dean Heller (R-Nev.) endorsed a proposal to let states opt out of Obamacare’s rules if they so choose.
Heller said in a statement that the “patient-centered” plan allows “states to customize insurance to their own specific needs and values while also ensuring affordable care for all Nevadans.”
The Congressional Budget Office reported that more than 20 million people will gain insurance coverage under the repeal of the Obamacare’s individual mandate.
Heller, who is up for re-election next year, said he believes the proposal with his fellow Republican Sen. Mike Lee (Utah) is the best option for Nevada.
By contrast, Heller supports the Senate leadership’s plan to hold a vote on the so-called “skinny repeal” bill, which would keep the Obamacare taxes in place but repeal other provisions.
The goal of that bill is to repeal some of the most unpopular provisions of the law, which gave out more money in tax credits and subsidies for insurance coverage, and lets insurers charge more sick people more or charge them more for the same coverage.
“Skinny repeal would be a step in the right direction, but it certainly won’t repeal or defund Obamacare,” Heller said. “It will still be there, and people will still be facing the problems it created.”
