Cyantraniliprole is a novel, potent insect-specific neonicotinoid (NEO). It is an irreversible inhibitor of midgut chymotrypsin-like serine proteases. It has potent insecticidal activity against dipteran, lepidopteran, coleopteran, and hemipteran insects. In an effort to understand the factors that control the insecticidal activity of this neo-NEO, a serial dilution experiment was conducted in order to assess the toxicity of cyantraniliprole to fourth-instar larvae of Ostrinia furnacalis, Diprion spp., and Spodoptera littoralis. Adult houseflies were then mass-released at a density of 100/10(6) m(3) into a non-flight period field cage trial using two Ostrinia-resistant strains with different susceptibilities to cyantraniliprole. The larvae died of mortality within 2-4 days after cyantraniliprole application. After the wild-type strain was mass-reared for 3 generations, it was observed that the larvae still lived in the absence of cyantraniliprole.
